As an expert in leadership, my highest priority in calling is developing youth as leaders through speaking, workshops, school assemblies, career days and any other opportunity to connect. Every encounter, program with youth is contemplated and created for that individual or group. One of the first things I learned in working with youth is that you have to speak directly to them and their situation. “Cookie-cutter” programs that are generalized will be immediately dismissed and ignored. My main current youth involvement is as the Director/Head Coach of Brooklyn EXCEL (Excellence and Character Empowers Leaders). The four years I have been coaching this team has taught me more about communicating with youth than any PhD program could. We have qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball Championships every year since 2016- and we have never had try-outs, have take every player who walked through the door. The tools of positive-reinforcement, building a relationship and treating them as “leaders” from the first day, can be applied to any setting in helping youth reach their potential.
Since I was an undergraduate student at Xavier University of Louisiana, I have been on this quest to help youth reach their potential. I started a “literacy through drama” after-school program as part of the university’s community service initiatives. We were so successful in helping the students increase their reading scores that I received some recognition from a newly elected President, Bill Clinton. The President invited me to stand with him as he announced his national volunteer program- AmeriCorps and I have been helping people reach their potential since than.
Even long before college, and for most of my life, I have been surrounded by this idea of helping individuals reach their potential. My parents started a school to educate children who were trapped in local, failing, urban schools. After a few years in the school, these children (who faced economic challenges and many other obstacles) were scoring at extremely high-levels, two and three grades above their actual level.
In addition, I have studied spiritual development, personal development and human achievement for close to twenty years. I am the author of two books, “From Goals to Greatness: How to Achieve Everything You Want” and the soon to be released “The 7 Laws of Purpose” (Ora House Books, November 2019). Yet, the most significant decisions I made as a Coach, was to join the John Maxwell Team and to become Certified through its Leadership, Coaching, Speaking, and Training Program. Inc. Magazine voted John Maxwell as the #1 leadership and management expert in the world! The John Maxwell Team is a unique group of people who have risen to the calling. We have taken a step to be side-by-side with the top leadership expert to grow, personally and professionally and to receive the knowledge, training, years of experience, and support, that is needed to become a top leader. Being a Team Member means that I am is equipped with the very best leadership skills, tools, resources, and can take advantage of 40+ years of proven leadership curriculum right from John himself. Moreover, these skills have prepared me to teach youth how to be more successful in life and business.
